This lecture is a speculative investigation into the multifaceted impact of Generative AI, traversing the realms of both practical applications and conceptual implications, offering a glimpse into the potential realities it unlocks. It explores the intrinsic link between technology and memory, and how their relationship shapes our reality through paradigm-shifting technological advancements. What do whale oil and bifocals have in common with generative AI? How is deepfake technology breaking down communication barriers, allowing content to become universally accessible? What does true co-creation between humans and artificial intelligence look like? These are questions that will be posed and addressed throughout this lecture. This critical and artistic inquisition into creative machines, digital culture, and the human experience will explore our role in this ever-shifting landscape of technology and society.

Sam Lawton is an internationally recognized artist, designer, filmmaker, and creative technologist.
He is currently working in New York city at Google Creative Lab.
His work explores technology and its effect on society through experimental methods and mediums.
He has been featured by publications like, WIRED, Filmmaker Magazine, and MIT’s Technology Review.
His most recent work, Expanded Childhood, debuted at the first ever AI Film Festival put on by Runway ML in New York City, followed by a screening at Tabakalera’s Immaterial: Digital realities in Spain.
Other notable projects include XR Limb, an exploration into synesthesia and phantom pain.
XR Limb is a mixed reality rehabilitation program designed to assist amputees in their recovery by replicating the effects of mirror therapy in a 3D-immersive environment.
